FI 15|09|2021 Original and inspiring, offering an engaging experience that is at once evocative and informative, featuring stories of contemporary life linked to the great Italian and international masters and their symbiotic relationship – yesterday, today and tomorrow – with the Palazzo, a “showcase” and a “training ground” for experimentation. For the first time, the public will also be invited to engage with moments of lived life at the Garden and Palace, through an exploration of traditional art professions, reinterpreted from a contemporary perspective.
And so tomorrow sees the opening of the 27th edition of ARTIGIANATO E PALAZZO, running from 16 to 19 September at Giardino Corsini in Florence and organised by the Associazione Giardino Corsini, under its current chair Sabina Corsini, and Neri Torrigiani who, together with Giorgiana Corsini, conceived of the first interactive exhibition dedicated to the art of handwork before anyone else was thinking of such things.
“We would like this 27th edition of our exhibition to offer the public a truly “immersive experience” of manual activities – by way of an entirely original itinerary through the Garden and Palace, which for the first time also takes in the private spaces on the ground floor, the new space set-up and the selection of master craftspeople – in response to a need to present visitors with an organic space that can remind them how, over the years, craftspeople and their workshops thrived around the “Palazzo”, an ideal place which became a “showcase” and “training ground” for experimentation, as required by the situation. It is inspired by the knowledge that the ability of the craftsperson to reinvent themselves starts here, with being able to share the unique relationship with beauty and art”, explain Sabina Corsini and Neri Torrigiani.
Updated with lots of sessions to follow and free open-air workshops where visitors can learn, the many new offerings at ARTIGIANATO E PALAZZO 2021 include: an extensive new selection of approximately 80 examples of artisan excellence to see and… hear; the “Mostra Principe” (Main Exhibition) dedicated this year to “Enrico Magnani Pescia. The art of handmade paper since 1481“, in the Ballroom; “Kindness and Sustainability”, a five-year project offering a useful tool to craftspeople to help guide in their choices towards a circular economy; the extension to Europe of the “Blogs & Crafts” contest, supporting new generations; the presence of directors of four Major Museums, protagonists of “Ricette di Famiglia” [Family Recipes] 2021, together with the chefs/teachers from the Cordon Bleu School of Culinary Arts in Florence; “Journey through Tuscany”, an exploration of the region’s products of excellence.
All this in an exhibition itinerary that winds its way through the Garden, the lemon houses and the Palace and that, for the first time, also takes in the fascinating and intriguing private spaces on the ground floor, never previously accessible to the public, and two entranceways, to allow the exhibition to be accessed from the Palazzo (via Il Prato, 58), as well as from the usual entrance via the Giardino (via della Scala, 115), more convenient for those arriving from outside the city by train, tramway and car.

MORE THAN JUST AN EXHIBITION
ARTIGIANATO E PALAZZO becomes an experience that invites the public to develop a relationship with the craftspeople at work in their workshops recreated in the new areas of the Palazzo – from the Monumental Halls to the Stables, from the Garages to the Harness Room, from the Carpenter’s Shop to the Woodshed passing through the splendid Lemon Houses – involved in the royal life of the Palazzo.
The Garden serves as a “large outdoor workshop” abuzz with gardeners, painters and restorers who carry out their maintenance work under the public gaze, and with many free events and workshops (which shall be booked by contacting rsvp@torrigiani.com) in the new “Decoration Space“, where Florentine master decorators (Olimpia Benini, Emanuele Capozza, Orietta Farinazzo and Francesca Guicciardini) take turns applying various wall decoration techniques in a creative journey exploring the fresco, gold leaf and wallpapers. Meanwhile, younger visitors will enjoy the contribution by “Fondazione Ferragamo” (booking recommended, contact info@fondazioneferragamo.it), involving printing on silk and weaving, while the Garage of the Palazzo presents the vintage cars of Prince Corsini (a Balilla, cars from the Interwar period, a Topolino, old Lancia models etc.), which still run today thanks to the expert hands of the mechanics and which are examples of Made in Italy excellence.
Around the Garden you will be able to meet the students of the “Florence Academy of Art” who will be involved in transferring their inspirations onto Magnani paper and whose works will be exhibited and put on sale every evening with proceeds going to support the fundraising promoted by ARTIGIANATO E PALAZZO.
The creative talent of the exhibiting craftspeople is enhanced by the new exclusive pavilions with an antique and fairy-tale charm handcrafted in hand-decorated canvas by Guido Toschi Marazzani Visconti in the Turin workshop as are the wicker and straw furnishings coordinated according to the theme, chosen from the Bonacina 1889 catalogue, a hand-made in Italy furnishing and design brand known all over the world.
Atmospheres and wonder that become the subjects of the new promotional campaign entrusted to the collages and videos of young Costanza Ciattini.
BROWSING AMONG THE CRAFTSPEOPLE OF THE 2021 EDITION…
The jewellery-making section features unique pieces that marry tradition with innovation. It includes jewellery by: Anna Maria Ermini, made from precious stones, pearls, gold and silver; Liana Scarano, whose imperfect creations convey the lightness of the metal; CōDICEDS, evoking bygone times through modern forms; and Francesca Grevi, whose handmade “Spira Mirabilis” collection, featuring silver wire and natural mineral stones and using wax casting and 3D design, draws together nature, art and place.
Interior Designers include: Sonia Pedrazzini, restoring three-dimensionality to the objects that Giorgio Morandi represented in his still-life paintings in the “Le Morandine” project, on display in the fascinating Harness Room at Palazzo Corsini.
Transforming anonymous places into elegant and characterful spaces are the mural paintings, stained glass, canvases, panels and painted furniture of Federica Corrocher; the breathtaking trompe l’oeil of Paola Farina; the projects by Intros; the mosaics featuring the coloured aluminium of tin cans by Luca Theodoli; the forged iron gates and works by Daniele Drovandi.
Furnishing accessories include: the 100% made-in-Florence silver and terracotta music speakers designed by Bianca Guscelli of Brandimarte – winner of BLOGS & CRAFTS 2018 – and Matteo Calamai of Dedalica Art in Technology, a marriage of high craftsmanship and innovation by two young people with art in their blood and a constant eye to the future; Paola Lucchesi’s handmade pots made from cellulose pulp; Petri‘s creations made from fossil, hard stone, crystals, coral, exquisite woods and animal horns combined with precious metals; the Floruit arrangements of flowers and various materials; the leather collections for interiors and small objects by Bottega Conticelli; the lamps, bookends, and keyrings personalised with one’s face as part of the “Il tuo viso” (Your face) project by Amedeo Raffaelli; the textile pieces featuring tufting, crochet, punch needle and embroidery by Taftique; the photos by Federico Minelli and the lamps by Beatrix Bulla, who last year became the winner of the first edition of the “Premio Giorgiana Corsini” (Giorgiana Corsini Prize).
New life is breathed into objects through restoration: Leonardo Pippi transforms furniture; the Beyer e Perrone Da Zara laboratory is concerned with antique textiles; while Atelier degli Artigianelli works with paper, offering a glimpse into the artistic professions in the paper world.
For those in search of accessories: Roxana Batog‘s extravagant hats are a fusion of London and Florentine millinery; Olivia Mills presents handmade, customisable, colourful bags; the Fratelli Peroni workshop presents their exquisite leatherwork.
The fabrics made by the women of the Cooperative Lou Dzeut – also chosen by Fendi for a special edition of “Baguette” – are the result of manual work on period wooden looms as are those made by the Weaving workshop of the Community of San Patrignano.
Also on display in the “Great Masters” Lemon House are costumes by Elena Bianchini of the Laboratorio d’Arte del Teatro della Pergola and the jewellery created by Riccardo Penko for Carlo Goldoni’s La donna volubile, directed by Marco Giorgetti and produced by the Fondazione Teatro della Toscana and Oltrarno, the acting school run by Pierfrancesco Favino.
MOSTRA PRINCIPE (Main Exhibition)
“ENRICO MAGNANI PESCIA. THE ART OF HANDMADE PAPER SINCE 1481″
The Mostra Principe (Main Exhibition) of this 27th edition will be dedicated to “Enrico Magnani Pescia. The art of handmade paper since 1481” which, over time and still today, links its production to international artists, writers and names of excellence.
“The world of handmade paper is fascinating and boasts a centuries-old history. Touching a sheet of handmade paper gives unique sensations. Watching a master paper maker create a sheet or a master seamstress sewing a watermark makes you understand how important it is to encourage and maintain these exceptional skills that are at the root of Italian success throughout the world. We address all those people who know how to recognise the value of things and who, although aware they live in a hectic world, do not want to do without, at least on certain occasions, the style and quality that only hand-crafted products can give. Furthermore, in a world where being eco-friendly is very important, handmade paper is the best solution possible, as it is produced with the strength of the arms and dried with the wind and the sun. Whether it is for a business card or for a letter to be written or for painting, Enrico Magnani Pescia hand-made paper sublimates our passions and freezes in time the important moments of our life.”, adds Marco Carrara, Vice President of the social enterprise Enrico Magnani Pescia.
“In this perspective, ARTIGIANATO E PALAZZO is a fundamental vehicle for knowledge and promotion. In this regard, I would like to recall with great affection and esteem the importance of the work carried out over time by Princess Giorgiana Corsini who, unfortunately, recently passed away, and who has always been interested and active in promoting the world of crafts with unique strength and dedication. The presence of her daughter Sabina is a reassuring sign of continuity of such a precious work. Long live art and craftspeople.”, concludes Carrara.
Set up in the Palazzo Corsini Ballroom, the exhibition will exceptionally display a selection of historical watermarked paper moulds, kept at the Museo della Carta di Pescia, and some important archival documents including – to commemorate the two hundred years since his death – the deckle for the paper which Magnani created in 1812 with the portraits of Napoleon Bonaparte and of Marie Louise, Duchess of Parma, for the celebrations of the Emperor’s wedding.
“The life of the Paper mill” will be recreated in a special section, where it will be possible to study the different phases of the manufacturing process through the live work of the master papermaker, while he is making the paper by hand; of the master filigree artist who will illustrate the process of making a watermark; as well as to discover the technique of sewing the watermark onto the paper mould, by means of a special sewing machine.
Finally, in the Exhibition, a calligrapher will give handwriting demonstrations and the Accademia Italiana del Galateo (Italian Academy of Etiquette) will present the “Galateo della Corrispondenza ad hoc” (Mail Etiquette), created in collaboration with Magnani.
A unique and precious historical archive, that of Casa Magnani, established in Pescia – according to archival sources – since the 15th century. A unique and great dynasty of paper makers, the Magnani family has been in Emilia since 1200 and through successive migrations moved to Liguria and Tuscany, finally settling in Pescia, creating a fine paper for centuries and establishing itself on world markets. It is therefore not surprising to find Magnani paper kept in the most important museums, in the letters of the Shelley brothers and of Lord Byron; in the Indian religious text Bhagavata Purana; in a collection of drawings and prints made in Iran under the Qajar Dynasty and in a vast corpus of works from the late 18th-early 19th century, today at the Gabinetto dei Disegni (Cabinet of Drawings) in the Castello Sforzesco in Milan. Magnani brands have recently been discovered in the documents of Giacomo Leopardi preserved in the poet’s birthplace.
There are two macro sectors of reference: writing and printing paper, and watermarked paper for revenue stamps and security papers (shares, bank checks, banknotes).
In the first area, for which the Magnani family created and developed personalised watermarks, it is worth mentioning Maestro Giacomo Puccini and the personalised writing paper for commander Gabriele D’Annunzio. The watermarks in the paper attest to the use of Magnani products also by artists such as Pablo Picasso – in particular a collection of drawings kept at the Picasso Museum in Paris – Giorgio Morandi, Giorgio De Chirico, Alberto Burri, Pietro Annigoni, Lorenzo Viani.
Important customers from the food, banking and insurance, automotive and transport, energy, petrochemical and metallurgical and fashion sectors currently turn to Casa Magnani.
After the crisis of the 1980s, the Carrara family, linked to Casa Magnani by ancient family ties, takes up the baton as an element of continuity and renewal, dedicating itself with enthusiasm and passion to safeguarding and preserving the huge Magnani heritage.
In 2005, the Carrara family bought the eighteenth-century Le Carte di Pescia Paper Mill, formerly Magnani, closed since 1992, to donate it to the Associazione Museo della Carta di Pescia ETS.
The Magnani Pescia Social Entrepreneurship, is a project born in 2021 in collaboration with the Associazione Museo della Carta di Pescia Onlus (Non-profit Organisation), with the aim of using the experience and know-how of now retired Master Papermakers, Filigree Artists and Sewers to train young people eager to learn the secrets of making paper by hand: a plan for safeguarding and for passing on these skills and expertise to new generations which would otherwise be lost.
“KINDNESS AND SUSTAINABILITY”
“Gentilezza e Sostenibilità” [Kindness and Sustainability] is the new project proposed by ARTIGIANATO E PALAZZO to Irene Ivoi – circular strategy designer and ecodesigner – offering a “guided reflection” to encourage craftspeople to operate according to the principles of a sustainable economy.
“We want to help craftspeople – and not just our exhibitors – to engage with environmental issues, giving them concrete tools to delve deeper, which we hope will lead them to produce and exhibit their works according to these reflections in the future”, explain Sabina Corsini and Neri Torrigiani.
This first phase of the project involves a “guide” and a “glossary” – both digital – to be presented on Saturday 18 September (4 pm) in the Giardinetto delle Rose, in collaboration with Lampoon magazine.
Rather than providing rules, the project offers gentle nudges (in keeping with “nudge theory”) to enable people to make decisions, where possible, that are more mindful of the planet, developing an architecture of options to protect the environment.
“Artisanal production means producing on a small – and often bespoke – scale. This does not excuse anyone from considering that even small-scale production can incorporate elements of mindfulness concerning use and consumption of the resources we obtain from the environment”, adds Irene Ivoi.
“BLOGS & CRAFTS EUROPE”
With a view to raising awareness and supporting the proactive role of younger generations in the sector, including internationally, the “BLOGS & CRAFTS young artisans and the web” contest – aimed at those under 35 who have chosen craft as their profession, giving them the opportunity to exhibit their works free-of-charge in the exhibition, and young influencers – has been extended to European countries. It is supported by the World Crafts Council Europe and has been made possible by the support of the Fondazione Ferragamo and in collaboration with Starhotels, 25hours Hotels and FOOO.
European contributors to ARTIGIANATO E PALAZZO, whose works are on display in the new exhibition space in the Stables at Palazzo Corsini, are: Ana Marta Pereira (Portugal), ceramicist and sculptor who draws inspiration from the female world and nature; Vienna-based Carolin Rechberger (Austria) who makes porcelain jewellery, also featuring recycled, environmentally-friendly material; Marta Benet Morera (Spain), craftsperson and designer-architect who designs and produces textile and ceramic pieces; Londoner Paris Andrew (Great Britain), who produces, repairs and restores bowed string instruments (violins, violas) and string instruments of the Baroque period; and Marta Barros (Portugal) who produces artisanal macramé interior design works, with the aim of bringing this textile art into the modern day.
Representing Italy are: Maria Francesca Broggini, offering a personal reinterpretation of exquisite and ancient goldwork techniques; Martina Scarpa of Ceramiche Lega in Faenza, who keeps the family tradition of the brand alive, while infusing it with new forms of experimentation; Claudio Campana, whose work is based on the centuries-old scagliola plaster technique and its expressive potential; Federico Varini, who sheds new light on forgotten objects and those destined to be thrown away, creating designer lamps; Daniela Manca, who produces leatherwork using exclusively manual techniques and no machines, even for sewing; Simone Falli, whose natural fibre homeware and clothing creations are inspired by a taste for the essential and an eco-sustainable ethic; Shanti Ganesha, who uses only vegetable tanning agents and nature-friendly treatments, with a tree being planted for each product sold.
The twelve young expert influencers selected by BLOGS & CRAFTS 2021 will report on them live while they work, while also looking at the exhibition.
CRAFTING EUROPE: NEW MODELS FOR EUROPEAN CRAFTS
Alongside the winners of BLOGS & CRAFTS Europe, a space in the Stables will be devoted to the “Crafting Europe” project, co-funded by Creative Europe and established in response to the need to develop new attitudes in the artistic crafts sector, promoting the integration of digital and new technologies into the traditional production system. “Crafting Europe” is the product of the synergistic collaboration of nine specialist organisations in the artistic crafts sector, based in Ireland, Italy, Spain, Portugal, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Georgia and Ukraine. Artex, Centro per l’Artigianato Artistico e Tradizionale della Toscana, is the Italian project partner.
“CRAFT GALLERY: JOURNEY THROUGH TUSCANY”
The FOCUS Space (Small Lemon House) features the original Artex project, curated by Jean Blanchaert, “Galleria dell’Artigianato: Viaggio in Toscana” (Craft Gallery: Journey through Tuscany) where the best of Tuscan production is presented together, offering visitors the opportunity to encounter extremely accomplished, highly skilled and creative craftspeople, who are often far from the limelight and who represent an integral element of Made in Tuscany.
A true itinerary, offering a veritable “Journey through Tuscany”, which winds its way through the various parts of the region; the stops along the way are represented by some of the key sites of artistic production, considered also in terms of their interactions with the culture and tourism of the region.
FAMILY RECIPES
The FAMILY RECIPES event – organised by journalist Annamaria Tossani – sees the exceptional presence of the directors of four major museums, who will recount the relationship between art and food culture, analysing the still lifes exhibited in the respective collections.
It will also provide an opportunity to exchange ideas on reception and refreshment facilities within the museums and the changes to customs and practices imposed by the pandemic.
Their home recipes will be prepared by teachers/chefs from the Cordon Bleu School of Culinary Arts in Florence and presented on plates produced by Atelier Fornasetti featuring the image of Lina Cavalieri, referred to by Gabriele D’Annunzio as the “personification of Venus on Earth”.

SESSIONS AND PRIZES
As well as the usual evening “Family Recipes” sessions held each day in the Giardinetto delle Rose (6 pm), the space will also host new events entitled “Una conversazione con…” (A conversation with…), in which a number of exceptional contributors to the Exhibition will be introduced to the public by unique ambassadors:

Finally, the “Premio Perseo” will be awarded to the exhibitor most popular with the public and the “Premio Giorgiana Corsini”, judged by the new Promotion Committee, will be awarded for the most beautiful stand, with the winner being entitled to exhibit their works at ARTIGIANATO E PALAZZO 2022 for free.
THE FUND-RAISING
For the second year running, the “ARTIGIANATO E PALAZZO: GIAMBOLOGNA E LA FATA MORGANA” fund-raising drive in favour of the precious monumental complex of the Fonte della Fata Morgana, nestled at the foot of the Fattucchia hill in the municipality of Bagno in Ripoli, continues.
To date, the project has led to the creation of a faithful copy of the statue of Giambologna entrusted to the restorer Filippo Tattini, 10 works on MEDUSA FONTE paper by artist Nicola Toffolini which will be exhibited in the Long Wing of Palazzo Corsini of ARTIGIANATO E PALAZZO and the provision of a first amount of € 25,000.

The Associazione Giardino Corsini, organiser of the ARTIGIANATO E PALAZZO exhibition in Florence, and Orticola di Lombardia, organiser of the “ORTICOLA” Exhibition-Market in Milan, both of which will run from 16 to 19 September 2021, have agreed to work together to raise public awareness of the two events celebrating excellence in Italian creativity, a value embodied by our country in all areas, which draws broad international recognition.
The collaboration between ARTIGIANATO E PALAZZO and ORTICOLA will allow free access to one of the two exhibitions, by presenting a ticket to the other.
